RESEARCH ASSISTANT

Grenfell Campus and its partners are advancing a Fibre research initiative to assist industry and provincial forest managers in their effort to enhance the modeling and mapping of wood fibre attributes on the landscape in order to maximize the value of existing and future fibre resources.  

DUTIES:Reporting to the Principal Investigator of the NL Fibre Inventory Project and working in collaboration wit researchers at the Canadian Forest Service in Corner Brook. Duties include developing new methods and inventory tools for modeling and mapping forest attributes linked to fibre properties in support of decision-making for the sustainable use of fibre resources; processing LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) data; creating, managing, and manipulating databases of LiDAR and image data; conducting image and spatial data analysis to support the mapping of forest attributes across landscapes; assisting with the preparation of reports and graphics for internal and/or external use and documentation destined for publication and performing other related duties as required. 

QUALIFICATIONS:Experience (up to 1 year) in research activities; graduation with an acceptable undergraduate degree from a recognized university in geography, environmental studies, geographical information systems, or other related area; or any equivalent combination of experience and training. The ideal candidate will have experience in performing data analysis using LiDAR data and image processing software, and conducting spatial analysis using geographic information systems (GIS). The candidate should have a strong knowledge of the principals of remote sensing, computer programming, database management and geographic information systems. The candidate should have demonstrated the ability to apply geospatial data analysis techniques to produce maps and digital coverage. The candidate should also have demonstrated the ability to communicate clearly, plan, and organize assigned work schedules effectively, and work in a team environment. Knowledge of and experience with ESRI GIS products, FUSION and TerraScan software would be an asset. 

SALARY: $40,534 - $56,841 per annum
